Being writer for blind students

I remember, in 2012 I had written 2 papers for blind students. After that, somehow I lost connect with the help group, plus I didnt attempt to find contact details etc. This year, I found this message on twitter and decided to be part of this very nice Initiative by Saathi – an initiative to integrate students with blindness into the college main life. Read More Here or SAATHI Enabling Centre (Overview in PDF)

Thus, decided to share it with twitter friends, WA groups and FB etc.

I confirmed my availability for English, Marathi writing, Any day, Any timeslot. Based on this, had a call with Kirti Deo – who was coordinating for this initiative. Chalked out a schedule for 9 days. And this journey started – being writer for blind students. I wrote exams in Fergusson College, Pune and SP College, Pune

WHAT I LEARNED – VALUE OF BEING ABLE TO SEE!

Instead of writing long observations and notes, would like to sum it up in points below

  • Blind students are absolutely motivated and their energy is way high than normal people like us
  • They need more support in ‘learning’ process
  • Many didn’t have access to audio notes, other study material
  • Blind students were happy to meet me, many exchanged good info on general life etc
  • All most everyone was well prepared and attempted all questions
  • They use public transport – as a routine, given that there are no special facilities for blind or disabled people, immense respect for all these students
  • Most of the students were focused and knew what they are going to do for a living, especially TYBA and MA students
  • Everyone smiled. Everyone SMILED

What can you do?

  • STOP cribbing. We crib a lot about so many things which dont matter.
  • Take out time – YES EVERYONE is busy, to help these folks
  • They are differently abled, if you spend more time with them, you would be far better human being
  • Please dont expect monitory benefits – there was a message on WA group, of some writer asking for ‘payment’ on writing paper.
  • These experiences have great value in LIFE. Please help needy
  • Dont just share it on social media, go out and work by making some time

Here is the timeline for the writing schedule. Hope to see you next time in one of the examination hall.

Shadows and Cities

I love shadows of people, trees, objects – Cities!

Somehow, they make me think. Especially on busy streets, it is fun to click pictures against the sun. They don’t tell you if the person is rich, poor, black or white.

They are shadows! Isn’t that the reflection of human beings?

Maintain your Worshiping Tempo…

India , land of Gods! People worship various forms of god! Atheists find it difficult to match upto the godly behavior, overall. Saw this vehicle, near shivdarshan chowk, Pune. A Mobile Temple!

Prabhat – At the Dusk…

Prabhat talkies, the best theatre in Pune – is a line which was true, may be before 2000. With multiplexes crowding the city, Prabhat stands at the dusk. I love the theatre, as it shows Marathi movies, at a decent(read very sasta) rate. Check what I had posted in 2o11 – Rs 24.50 + S.Charge… . Now it is 50 Rs. (It was 24.5 in 2011 Nov)

‘Pen’Full Story : Kale Pens…

One of the oldest pen manufactures from Pune. Even my grandfather has memories of he using kale pens (he is 81 today). Visited the shop today, a small, insignificant setup, near Dagdusheth Temple, Pune. When Parker, Lamy, Cardin and other brands are going big, Kale Pens doesnt seem to be doing any marketing activity. But, most punekars would know about Kale Pens.

DSC_0009

They have 4 patterns/models of Pens to select. These look like Hero China Pens, plus some camlin pens. But, these were designed much before Hero did. If you notice the price, i am sure, you are going to smile. NEAT value for what you are spending. Though the plastic quality can be a turn down for many (not me)

Top 2 pens - Rs 30 Bottom 2 for 20 Rs each

Sample Pens – Top 2 pens – Rs 30 and 20; Bottom 2 for 20 and 30 Rs each

So after i selected the top model (in the pic above), the shopkeeper assembled the pen, refine filed it and inserted a nib. AND THE PEN WAS READY. Kale Ink is also super blue and smooth. But they dont sell it in a bottle , instead he handed a plastic bag packed with ink, nicely sealed. I carried it in my pocket and it was intact! PS – Ink Bag is for Rs 5!

Here is the ink Bag – Rs 5!

Ink Bag - Blue

Ink Bag – Fresh Blue. It smells good too!

Look at the rates, and guarantee! This is the board outside the shop

DSC_0010

Photo frame in this pic is Mr.Kale who started this business. Also, check the size of the shop. It is very very small

Their factory is in Kasba Peth , Pune. They manufacture and sell more than 200 pens in a month (this was told by the person working here. Couldn’t meet the owner today).  They do not sell at any other retail stationery shops. Customer base is students, Teachers from Pune, but more from near by villages. They also a give a guarantee card, which I didn’t get… that makes me enthusiastic to visit the shop once again!

So, A pen and ink bag would cost you 20+5 or 30+5. That’s it! Kale Pens are also known for  repairing old ink pens. I saw many fountain pens piled up (for repairing or might be scrapped).

All in all – A ‘Pen’Full Story!

SAD UPDATE : The shop and manufacturing is closed. You may see the shop open, but they dont have any stock.

World Post Day

Today is World Post Day – जागतिक टपाल दिन ! One person which makes this system working is the Postman. On this occasion, clicked a pic with postman in Pune. His name is Kiran Kokane, working in Indian Postal service for 18 years now. His native place is Manchar, in Maharashtra (India).

He was aware about today being World Post Day, and he was happy to be clicked.

Bioscope…A lost memory

Sunday afternoon is a movie time. Me and Kaustubh , saw a different movie today. We saw this guy coming with a huge box which has cinema in it. Till he had lunch, we were in queue. I had never seen such a movie, was curious to see what is the mystery, why kids run this man (use to, now with computer games and multiplexes etc this is passé)

Waiting for OUR HERO to finish his lunch and set his SHOW!

Waiting for OUR HERO to finish his lunch and set the SHOW!

The show started! I saw ads cut from newspaper, right from Priyanka Chopra at some opening ceremony, Movie ads in newspaper, some news (in marathi). I initially thought that isnt it a great idea to show ads before the movie begins, but after the ads, there was no movie!

As I watched he played some music. The show got over in about 40 secs. All I paid is Rs 10!

Me watching Ads (CInema). He moves a handle which allows a paper to roll over and I could see frames changing! Pretty much like a reel!

Kaustubh Watching - And he says ---> Cinemascope... this thing is still there in city.. small thing but happy to see it's still there.. sure this wld not be there to be seen by my kid..

Now it was kaustubhs’ turn to  watch the same movie! Soon, we pulled some crowd for him, few more joined in this NEW way (actually a very old way) of watching cinema.

His name is Shahnawaaj. Age – close to 70, his eyes had visible cataract. We were at Sahakarnagar and he lives near Dandekar pool (Pune), so he walks few kms everyday, carrying this machine, spreading joy!

Kaustubh clicks Shahnawaaj, Me, Cinemascope machine and Gudiya - see that doll!

देवघरातला अंधार

Image
